Bela Bose, the veteran actress and famous classical dancer from the ‘60s, passes away

The yesteryear actress Bela Bose, who ruled the ‘60s and ‘70s with her striking performances, took her last breath today on February 20 at the age of 79. However, the cause of the death is still unknown.

Born in Kolkata, although Bela Bose made her Bollywood debut in the early ‘50s, she got her first big break with Raj Kapoor in the film ‘Main Nashe Mein Hoon’ (1959). Next she received her first leading role in ‘Sautela Bhai’ (1962) opposite Guru Dutt at the age of only 21. Since then, in three decades of her career, she had worked in over two hundred films including Hindi and regional languages.

Not only with her acting, but Bela Bose was also quite well known for her classical dance as she was a trained Manipuri dancer. Bose was a multi-faceted actress, who was a poet, a painter and also a state level swimmer. She also served as the President of War Windows Association under the aegis of Smt. Mohini Giri.

After ‘Sautela Bhai’, Bela Bose worked in numerous films like ‘Hawa Mahal’ (1962), ‘Prem Patra’ (1962), ‘Bandini’ (1963), ‘Ziddi’ (1964), ‘Fareb’ (1968), ‘Jeene Ki Raah’ (1969), ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’ (1975), ‘Sau Din Saas Ke’ (1980) and many more.

Bela Bose was married to renowned actor-director Ashish Kumar, who also passed away in 2013. They got married in 1967. She gradually eased out from the entertainment industry after giving birth to a daughter and a son.
