Lyricist Maya Govind passed away on Thursday 7 April 2022, at the age of 82 due to health issues. She started her career in 1972 and has written songs for around 350 films. She was also a poet and a theatre actor. She was known to have broken stereotypes and gave the Hindi film industry a number of hits, which many are still appreciated today.

Music composer Anu Malik is deeply saddened and shocked at her demise. She collaborated with him a number of times in the early ’90s. Her famous works with Anu Malik were mainly from ‘Main Khiladi Tu Anari’ (1994), ‘Naajayaz’ (1995), ‘Takkar’ (1995), ‘Chaahat’ (1996) and ‘Beqabu’ (1996).

Their biggest superhit together is “Aankhon Mein Base Ho Tum” from ‘Takkar’ rendered by Abhijeet and Alka Yagnik. The lyrics by Maya Govind completely complemented the melody composed by the versatile composer. It also showed how her lyrics were simple, heart-touching and apt.

In an exclusive interview with us, Anu Malik stated that, “May Maya Ji’s soul rest in peace. She was a great lyric writer who had a tremendous flair for writing. The lyrics Maya ji wrote touched every listener’s heart. Maya ji was very intuitive, she wrote all my songs understanding my tune just rather than the situation. She always told me that my tunes are catchy, melodic, racy and the lyrics should complement them.”

He further said, “Every song Maya ji wrote for me, I don’t remember ever rejecting any one of them. I used to accept her ‘mukhdas’ in an instant and never asked her to write a new one ever because she understood the situation so well instantly. May Maya Ji’s soul rest in everlasting peace. Om Shanti.”
