Tamasha has a fantastic weekend

‘Tamasha’ has done well over the weekend. The film took a good start on Friday (Rs. 108.7 million), showed growth on Saturday (Rs. 131.7 million) and then consolidated well on Sunday (Rs. 141.2 million), hence seeing a weekend of Rs. 382.3 million. This has been a positive trend for the Imtiaz Ali directed film which was catering to a niche audience and was unlike any of the quintessential romcoms that hit the screens with every passing month. With a conventional narrative to boast of, the film has found good following from the target audiences, who have lapped up what was on display.

The film has now seen the best opening for a Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone starrer as their biggest weekend so far in 2015 was ‘Roy’ (Rs. 286.8 million) and ‘Piku’ (Rs. 252.2 million). Moreover, for Imtiaz Ali too, this is his biggest opening weekend ever, hence surpassing ‘Love Aaj Kal’ (Rs. 280 million) and ‘Rockstar’ (Rs. 350 million). What is all the more noticeable is that the film is now Ranbir Kapoor’s second highest weekend ever after ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ (Rs. 621.1 million) and also his best ever in over two and a half years.

Here are the opening weekend collections of last few Ranbir Kapoor starrers in the current decade:

‘Raajneeti’ (2010) – Rs. 340 million
‘Anjaana Anjaani’ (2010) – Rs. 257.5 million
‘Rockstar’ (2011) – Rs. 350 million
‘Barfi!’ (2012) – Rs. 342.5 million
‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ (2013) – Rs. 621.1 million
‘Besharam’ (2013) – Rs. 343.7 million
‘Roy’ (2015) – Rs. 286.8 million
‘Bombay Velvet’ (2015) – Rs. 162 million
‘Tamasha’ (2015) – Rs. 382.3 million*
