‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ will rack up at least $170 million over its domestic opening weekend when it hits theaters next December,  according to early estimates.
There are few, if any, movies in history that can claim to have an iconic status similar to that of ‘Star Wars’. With the movie – ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ all set to hit cinemas this Christmas on 25th December 2015 in India, and with one month to go, the excitement has reached fever pitch.
Renowned industry experts have said that the film will hit or exceed $200 million and is poised to set a new record in its opening weekend. With just a month to go, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ is already shattering records. The seventh film in the massively popular franchise has generated more than $50 million in advance ticket sales. Four weeks before its debut, the film has more than that in the bank. The record-breaking advance ticket sales are just one sign that this new installment of ‘Star Wars’ could become the highest-grossing release of all time.
To accommodate demand, a number of theaters are staying open round the clock during the movie’s first week and adding screenings at offbeat hours such as 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.
‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ is also poised to break the record for a December opening held by 2012’s ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ at $84.6 million — giving it roughly $170 million.
The movie releases on December 25, 2015.
