This Mother’s Day, we bring to you five performances of actresses as mothers that touched a chord with the viewers.

Nargis

The role played by Nargis in ‘Mother India’ (1957) deserves all the praise. Nargis played the character of mother Radha in the film who is ready to go to any extent for the sake of her children. Nargis’s performance helped her win the Filmfare Best Actress Award in 1958. She also became the first Indian to receive the Best Actress award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Nirupa Roy

The way Nirupa Roy breathed life into her character in ‘Deewaar’ (1975) deserves endless appreciation. In this iconic movie, she played the role of Amitabh and Shashi Kapoor’s mother. The Yash Chopra directorial focuses on how a mother brings her son onto the right path.

Rakhee Gulzar

‘Karan Arjun’ (1995), starred Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, led to a frenzy and craze as soon as it was released. In this film, apart from the lead actors, the character who became the talking point was the one played by Rakhee. The unwavering faith of the mother shown in the film is heart-warming. Her dialogue “Mere Karan Arjun aayenge” (my Karan and Arjun will come oneday) has achieved legendary status.

Reema Lagoo

Reema Lagoo played the role of Mamta in Sooraj Barjatya’s ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’ (1999). The family entertainer throws light on how a mother holds the whole family together. She played her character with genuineness and won hearts.

Sridevi

As Devki Sabharwal, Sridevi delivered an impeccable performance in ‘Mom’ (2017). The thriller is about a mother who goes to insane lengths to get justice for her daughter after the letter gets raped. That this was Sridevi’s last performance before her untimely death in 2018 also made it all the more special.
