‘Amar Singh Chamkila’, starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, was recently placed on Netflix’s list of upcoming titles. Directed by Imtiaz Ali, it depicts the unsung true story of Amar Singh Chamkila, Punjab’s first mass-appeal rockstar who rose to fame in the ’80s, thanks to the sheer power of his songs. He was, however, murdered at the age of 27. Chamkila was the best-selling artist of his age and is still regarded as one of Punjab’s greatest performers. Today, the teaser was out and it has caught attention.

The film’s music is composed by A.R. Rahman, which assures that audiences will once again get to enjoy the magic of the Rahman-Imtiaz collaboration. This time, they are also joined by Diljit Dosanjh, who besides being a lead actor, has also lent his voice to one of the songs in this musical drama.

Imtiaz Ali said that making the movie on the life of the popular music superstar was an unforgettable experience for him. He also added that he is fortunate to work with Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, especially since the movie has live singing. The movie traces the unfathomable popularity of Chamkila’s music and how it was ignored by mainstream culture. Imtiaz also appreciated Netflix for giving him the opportunity to share his experience with millions of people worldwide.

Singer Diljit Dosanjh, who plays the titular role in the film, stated that playing the role of Amar Singh Chamkila was one of the most difficult things he has ever done. He is excited to be making a comeback to Netflix after ‘Jogi’ (2022), with yet another captivating tale. The actor revealed that it was an honour to perform on Rahman’s extraordinary music and also expressed is gratefulness for Imtiaz’s faith in him.

‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ is scheduled to release on Netflix in 2024.
