In an interview with The Atlantic few days back, director Rian Johnson had expressed his deep frustration over the title of his recently released film ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’ (2022) on Netflix.

‘Glass Onion’ is the sequel of the much loved mystery film ‘Knives Out’, which was released in 2019, with Daniel Craig reprising his role as the private investigator Benoit Blanc as he takes on a new case revolving around a tech billionaire’s anticipated murder and his old friends.

In the interview, Rian divulged that he was quite miffed for adding ‘A Knives Out Mystery’ in the title and said, “I have tried hard to make them self-contained. Honestly, I’m pissed off that we have ‘A Knives Out Mystery’ in the title. You know? I want it to just be called ‘Glass Onion’.”

“I get it and I want everyone who liked the first movie to know this is next in the series, but also, the whole appeal to me is it’s a new novel off the shelf every time. But there is a gravity of a thousand suns toward serialized storytelling”, Johnson further continued.

‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’ has already topped Netflix’s most watched chart since its premiere on December 23. Not only just a new story, but the sequel also features a new ensemble of cast such as Dave Bautista, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Kate Hudson and Edward Norton, Jessica Henwick and Madelyn Cline.

Rian Johnson also shared that there’s another reason he did not want the ‘Knives Out’ name to be carried on any further because the 2019 film helped him achieve an Oscar nomination for original story and screenplay.

However, Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig have already signed for the third sequel of the film with Netflix. And seems like the title ‘Knives Out’ will remain in the third installment as well, even after the director’s disagreement.
