In the realm of directors, there are visionary male filmmakers who have not only embraced the art of storytelling but have also excelled in presenting strong, women-centric narratives. These directors have defied societal norms, challenging traditional gender roles and stereotypes to deliver compelling stories that centre around the experiences, struggles and triumphs of female characters.

Here are our favourite five directors and their films:

Ram Madhvani – Neerja

Ram Madhvani directed the critically acclaimed film ‘Neerja’ (2016) based on the real-life story of Neerja Bhanot, a courageous flight attendant who saved passengers during a hijacking. Through his masterful storytelling, Madhvani captures Neerja Bhanot’s unwavering bravery and selflessness, leaving audiences inspired by her remarkable journey.

Vikas Bahl – Queen

Vikas Bahl’s ‘Queen’ (2014) is a heartwarming and empowering film that tells the story of Rani, played by Kangana Ranaut. After being jilted at the altar, Rani embarks on a solo honeymoon trip that transforms her into an independent, confident woman. The film celebrates self-discovery, female empowerment and breaking societal norms.

Pradeep Sarkaar – Mardaani

Directed by Pradeep Sarkar, ‘Mardaani’ (2014) is a gripping crime thriller that follows a fearless female police officer played by Rani Mukerji. The film addresses the issue of human trafficking and emphasises the strength and determination of the protagonist as she fights against the criminals. Pradeep Sarkar’s direction in ‘Mardaani’ is commendable for skillfully crafting a gripping crime thriller that sheds light on the grave issue of human trafficking. With finesse, he presents a complex and intense narrative, and through the fearless portrayal of the female protagonist by Rani Mukerji, Sarkar deliveres a hard-hitting film that raises awareness and sparks important conversations.

Omung Kumar – Mary Kom

Omung Kumar directed the biographical sports drama ‘Mary Kom’ (2014), based on the life of the renowned Indian boxer. The film portrays the struggles and triumphs of Mary Kom, played by Priyanka Chopra, as she overcomes obstacles and becomes a world champion. It showcases her determination, perseverance and the indomitable spirit of a woman in a male-dominated field.

Anubhav Sinha – Thappad

Anubhav Sinha’s ‘Thappad’ (2020) is a thought-provoking social drama that delves into the issue of domestic violence. The film revolves around a woman who decides to challenge societal norms and seek justice after her husband slaps her at a party. It sheds light on the significance of consent, equality, and the strength of women to stand up against injustice. Anubhav Sinha’s directorial prowess shines brightly in ‘Thappad’ as he fearlessly tackles the sensitive subject of domestic violence, creating a thought-provoking social drama that resonates deeply with its audience.

While these are our favourite few films of recent times, we are very excited about some very interesting women stories upcoming up directed by male directors – ‘Sanaa’ and ‘Ulajh’ directed by Sudhanshu Saria, ‘Tejas’ directed by Sarvesh Mewara and ‘Chakda Xpress’ directed by Prosit Roy.
