Jerry Springer passed away at the age of 79, on Thursday in a suburb of Chicago. After a somewhat bizarre political career, he switched to an almost indescribably unusual broadcasting career with ‘The Jerry Springer Show’ (1991-2018), which set a new standard for tawdry on American television. It changed the talk-show format into an arena for shocking confessions, adultery-fueled screaming matches and frequent fistfights.

Jene Galvin, the executive producer of Jerry Springer’s podcast, who is also a family friend, announced the demise of Jerry following a brief illness. He released a statement which said, “Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word. He’s irreplaceable and his loss hurts immensely, but memories of his intellect, heart and humor will live on.”

After graduating from Northwestern University with a law degree in 1968, Jerry Springer began pursuing a career in politics and was elected to the Cincinnati City Council in 1971. However, he quickly became involved in a private scandal that later supported his talk show. After it was discovered that he had written a cheque for servitude at a Kentucky massage parlour, he resigned in 1974.
