Taapsee Pannu: From nothing to everything

Taapsee Pannu has been in the industry for 11 years now and has worked tremendously hard to become who she is today – one of the most versatile actresses in the film industry, a journey which started when she was 23 and now, she is recognized among the well-known artists in the industry.

After finishing her graduation, Taapsee Pannu worked as a computer engineer before she paced her career in showbusiness as a model. She became a permanent model after she got selected for Channel V’s talent show ‘Get Gorgeous’ (2004) which gradually led her to start her acting career. In Pannu’s modeling career she received a lot of titles like ‘Pantaloons Femina Miss Fresh Face’ (2008), ‘Safi Femina Miss Beautiful Skin’ at the 2008 Femina Miss India contest and others. Also, in her modeling career, she worked for some famous brands like Reliance Trends, Coca-Cola, Red FM 93.5, Motorola, PVR Cinemas, Airtel, Dabur, Tata Docomo, Havells and many more. There was no stopping. She was on the front-page magazine covers like, ‘Just For Women’ and ‘MaaStars’. However, she lost her fascination for modeling and realized that she wants more recognition and for that she has to go on the big screen now.

Taapsee Pannu practically started her acting career in Telegu and Tamil cinemas. Her first cinematic debut was in a Telegu romantic musical called ‘Jhummandi Naadam’ (2010) with Manoj Manchu, directed by K. Raghavendra Rao. In 2011, Pannu made her first debut in Tamil cinema called ‘Aadukalam’ (2011), The movie was praised enthusiastically by critics and won six National Film Awards at the 58th National Film Awards Festival. Later that year again, she returned to Telegu cinema by acting in ‘Vastadu Naa Raju’ (2011) with Vishnu Manchu. Also, that same year Pannu entered into the Malayalam film industry in the movie ‘Doubles’ (2011) with Mammootty and Nadiya Moidu. She acted in a big budget movie named ‘Veera’ (2011) with Ravi Teeja and Kajal Aggarwal. Pannu did innumerable number of South Indian movies and got highly recognized by the industry and everybody praised her for her versatility.

Taapsee Pannu’s Hindi film industry debut was in David Dhawan’s ‘Chashme Baddoor’ (2013) and that was a remake of the classic ‘Chashme Baddoor’ (1981). Pannu worked with Rishi Kapoor, Siddharth, Ali Zafar, Divyendu Sharma and others in that movie. Even though the film received collectively a lot of negative reviews, it was a box office hit. Later in the same year she was seen in the high budget action thriller ‘Arrambam’ (2013) for which she received the Most Enthusiastic Performer–Female Award at the 2014 Edison Awards. She acted in Neeraj Pandey’s ‘Baby’ (2015) with Akshay Kumar and became a household name afterwards.

Above all, Taapsee Pannu’s biggest box office hit was Shoojit Sircar’s ‘Pink’ (2016) starring Amitabh Bachchan. The versatile artist herself admitted that ‘Pink ‘was a big turning point in her career and she got innumerable movie offers and did a number of hit films.

Movies like ‘The Ghazi Attack’ (2017) which was shot both in Hindi and Telegu languages simultaneously, was a satisfactory hit at the box office and others like ‘Running Shaadi’ (2017), ‘Naam Shabana’ (2017), ‘Judwaa 2’ (2017) with Varun Dhawan all recovered their costs.

Pannu acted as a lawyer in Anubhav Sinha’s ‘Mulk’ (2018) which got her Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress nomination. Taapsee starred in Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Manmarziyaan’ (2018) with Abhishek Bachchan and Vicky Kaushal. Her second collaboration with Amitabh Bachchan was Sujoy Ghosh’s mystery thriller ‘Badla’ (2019). She was first approached for a supporting role for that movie but later she convinced the directors for giving her the leading role.

Her association with Anubhav Sinha continued with ‘Thappad’ (2020) and it was equally appreciated. The feisty actress also signed to star as cricketer Mithali Raj in ‘Shabaash Mitthu’.

Vogue Eyewear recently appointed her as their brand ambassador and she signed with Garnier Colour Naturals, Melange, Coverfox and Nivea before.

Taapsee Pannu and Vikrant Massey starrer ‘Haseen Dilruba’ released on an OTT platform recently and has opened to mixed reviews. She also recently announced her first project as producer, an ‘edge of the seat thriller’ titled ‘Blurr’.

But above all of her achievements, she worked hard to become who she is today. Nobody but only she knows what it means to come from absolutely nothing to being everything. It takes a lot to be Taapsee today and she made sure that she gets what she wants with her amazing acting skills. Go girl!
