Today is the 140th birth anniversary of Veer Savarkar, one of the most controversial and famous revolutionary leaders of the Indian freedom struggle. To commemorate this occasion, renowned actor Randeep Hooda released the first teaser of his biopic, ‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar’ which also marks Randeep’s directorial debut. The actor, who is known for dedicated transformations for his roles, has once again immersed into the skin of the character and looks unrecognizable in the one-minute thirteen-second-long teaser.

Randeep’s character Savarkar claims in the teaser that Mahatma Gandhi wasn’t wrong but India could have attained freedom thrity-five years ago before the actual date if it hadn’t stayed true to his non-violence philosophy. The teaser further states that Savarkar guided Bhagat Singh, Subhas Chandra Bose and Khudiram Bose and ends with a mysterious question which says, “Who killed his story?”.

Launching the film’s teaser, Randeep said, “Savarkar led an incredible life, and as I learned more about him while researching for my film, I have come to admire him tremendously. So it gives me immense pleasure to share a sneak peek into our film on his 140th birthday.”

Directed and co-written by Randeep Hooda with Utkarsh Naithani, ‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar’ is produced by Anand Pandit Motion Pictures and Randeep Hooda Films with Legend Studios and Avak Films. The principal shooting for the film is almost complete, and it is slated to release in cinemas this year.

Interestingly, ‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar’ was to be directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, who had also shot some of its scenes. However, Mahesh reportedly moved out of the project due to creative differences with Randeep Hooda. This is when the actor made the decision to take over as the movie’s director.
