Pratyusha Banerjee sad demise by suicide on April 1, 2016 has shocked the film and television industry and viewers alike. She was only twenty four years old and started her television career at a very young age. Her first role as “Anandhi” in the famous serial ‘Balika Vadhu’ on Colors TV bought her a lot of success and her acting performance was very much appreciated. She was a very good young talent coming to the industry. Her pairing and chemistry with Shashank Vyas, who played the role of ‘Jagadish’ was loved by viewers. They made a beautiful on-screen couple. She left the serial when it was taking a leap. She felt that leap will not suit her age. Pratyusha was very clear on this and she wanted to work on her own terms.

After ‘Balika Vadhu’, she was part of reality shows like ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5’ and ‘Bigg Boss 7’. But these reality shows did not help much in her career growth in the television industry. We did not see her in major main lead roles. The film and television industry can be ruthless to any actors. Once you play the main lead in any film or television, you want to keep that going. But all actors are not lucky. You may be very talented but luck plays a very important role in the film and television industry. Actors also need to work hard. Pratyusha got lead roles in ‘Gulmohar Grand’ and ‘Hum Hain Naa’ but these serials did not get enough TRP ratings. Success was eluding her and on the other hand, her personal life was also difficult.

The actors have a difficult life to live under the media glare. The work and life balance is very challenging. Actors emote romantic scenes on-screen with co-actors but they never know how their life partner take that personally. Does that affect their personal relationships or make life more complex? Is there enough trust and love between two partners? There are chances of attraction during shooting of such scenes. Life has become challenging in general but for actors, it is increasingly more. With women empowering themselves, Pratyusha Banerjee should have been stronger and should not have taken such a drastic step. Life is more endearing than any relationship.

We all have setbacks in our lives, be it professionally or personally. Things don’t always go the way we want. There are ups and downs in everyone’s life. We need to be fighters. Recently we have seen a couple of television and film actors’ suicide and ending their lives in the South. The television and film actors’ life depends on box office and TRPs. There is so much competition in the industry and it is like Darwin’s theory ‘Survival of the Fittest’. A Friday can change a film actor’s career. Low TRPs can end an actor’s career in the television industry. We can be ambitious and work hard but contentment should always be there. Late Pratyusha Banerjee will always be remembered for her role as “Anandhi” in ‘Balika Vadhu’ and may her soul rests in peace.
