Written and directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri Jersey’ is his Hindi directorial debut, remaking his Telugu film of the same title. The movie stars Shahid Kapoor, Mrunal Thakur and Pankaj Kapoor in lead roles. The movie is about a middle-aged cricketer who decides to revive his career at the age of 36. When he gave up cricket at the age of 26, it did not matter much because he was occupied with other things but years later, he realised that it was only cricket that makes him happy. It took a lot for him to rise above his heroic past as a cricketer and he decided not to play cricket ever again. However, he returns to the 22 yards to fulfill his son’s wish of getting an Indian jersey as a gift.

The journey of Shahid Kapoor aka Arjun Talwar is an emotion-soaked narrative that started in a dressing room and ended up there. The father and son bond that is depicted is exemplary. The character of Arjun is extremely relatable and anyone who tasted failure will feel a connection with him.

The movie comes with a surprise element at the end and one would hardly expect such an outcome. In this sports drama, the protagonist doesn’t make any strong statements about his career or goals. It’s just that Cricket was where he truly belonged.

Mrunal aka Vidhya was Arjun’s wife who loved him unconditionally but the frustration of seeing him drift away from her every single day made her furious. Her fear of losing him, the hope of being happy and confusion about the increased distance in their relationship is presented extremely well.

After watching the trailer and the music videos, one might feel that Shahid has walked out of the sets of ‘Kabir Singh’ (2019) but his character and presentation is completely different.

The end is unbelievable. It’s an emotional high point and is extremely sensitive. Being a sports drama, if one expects the tension of cricket on the ground and some technical scores, then one might get disappointed because this story is more about the emotional journey of a cricketer. Cricket is an emotion for the protagonist rather than a career.

The songs are composed by Sachet and Parampara while the lyrics are written by Shelley. The tracks are amazing with a beautiful flow that makes the narrative even better.
