“I dislike drinking and partying” – Ashrut Jain

Ashrut Jain plays Rashid in the courtroom drama ‘Mulk’, which is receiving rave reviews. The young promising actor hails from Yash Raj Films’ casting department, where he has worked for three years, will also be seen in Shree Nayan Singh’s ‘Batti Gul Meter Chalu’, which features Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. He also did some small roles in ‘Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela and ‘M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story’. He shares his views openly about his movies and life.

How is your experience in the casting department helping you today in the acting department?
It was the most incredible learning experience ever. I have auditioned around 250,000 talents from behind the camera. I realised what looks good and what looks bad. I absorbed the good one. I cherish the visual library I made.

How much did you prepare for the role in ‘Mulk’ and are you happy with the final product?
I did a lot of research and studied a lot about the Muslim culture. I learned a lot about Muslims living in Benaras. I saw plenty of courtroom dramas, cult courtroom dramas and some real old cult films like ‘Mere Mehboob’, ‘Mere Huzoor’, and ‘In the Name of the Father’. I made a diary of 200 pages, all filled with references. I love going to Haji Ali and went almost every day for a week, not just to pray but to absorb the culture.

What is special about your role in ‘Batti Gul Meter Chalu’?
I am on the other side of the confession box where I play a lawyer. It’s a film on basic electricity problems.
