Bhupinder Singh, legendary ghazal singer passes away

Legendary playback singer and ghazal artist, Bhupinder Singh took his last breath this evening, on July 18 at the age of 82 in Mumbai. The news was confirmed by his grieving wife, Mitali Singh, as told to IANS. She said, “He was suffering from several health complications including urinary issues, since some time.”

Singh had started his career by performing on All India Radio from Delhi. He had also worked at Delhi Doordarshan Center and learned guitar and violin side by side. In 1962, he got recognised by music director, Madan Mohan and the latter invited him to join a dinner party hosted by Satish Bhatia, who was the producer of AIR Delhi. Later, Bhatia gave Singh chance to sing the song “Hoke Majboor Mujhe Usne Bulaya Hoga” along with legendary singers Mohammad Rafi, Talat Mahmood and Manna Dey in Chetan Anand’s film ‘Haqeeqat’ in 1964. From then, Singh rose to fame for his melodious voice and gave numerous soulful songs one-by-one.

Bhupinder Singh also gave many popular duets with Kishore Kumar and R.D. Burman as a guitarist such as “Dum Maro Dum” from ‘Hare Ram Hare Krishna’ (1971), “Chingari Koi Bhadke” from ‘Amar Prem’ (1972), “Chura Liya Hai” from ‘Yaadon Ki Baraat’ (1973), “Mehbooba O Mehbooba” from ‘Sholay’ (1975) and “Chalte Chalte” title track from ‘Chalte Chalte’ (1976) with Bappi Lahiri.

As a singer he had given unforgettable songs like “Hoton Pe Aisi Baat” from ‘Jewel Thief’ (1967), “Aane Se Uske Aaye Bahar” from ‘Jeene Ki Raah’ (1969), “Dil Dhoondta Hai” from ‘Mausam’ (1975), “Kisi Nazar Ko Tera Intezar Aaj Bhi Hai” from ‘Aitbaar’ (1985) and many more.

Currently it’s been reported that further details of Singh’s funeral arrangements will be informed shortly.
