Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Bajirao Mastani’ has been in the news for a decade now. The filmmaker wanted to make this period drama right after ‘Black’ and had envisioned Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the lead roles. The project did not take off but it never went off public memory courtesy rumours of the film being revived floating every now and then. Finally, ten years after the film was announced, it is all set to hit theatres worldwide on December 18, 2015.

While Bhansali could realize his dream of seeing Salman and Aishwarya play the titular roles of Bajirao and Mastani, he got his Ram-Leela Jodi to be a part of the film. Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone are joined by Priyanka Chopra in this historical romance that throws light on the love story of Bajirao (Ranveer Singh) and Mastani (Deepika Padukone) while also giving one a glimpse into the relationship shared by the Maratha warrior with his first wife Kashibai (Priyanka Chopra).
In today’s times, when filmmakers are more interested in exploring contemporary subjects, one misses watching films of the likes of Mughal-E-Aazam and Pakeezah. Jodhaa Akbar was probably the last period drama, mounted on a lavish scale, which struck a chord with the audience.

The length of the trailer of Bajirao Mastani (3:45 min) does justice to the scale and grandeur of the film. By the time the trailer comes to an end, you do not even realize that the trailer was that long as you get engrossed in the drama, romance, dialogues and the scale which the trailer boasts of. The trailer is not only a visual delight but it also makes one look forward to a film which will have a good story to offer. A bald Ranveer Singh looks completely immersed in his character. Though one wonders whether an older actor would have been more suitable for this role. Deepika Padukone, who has impressed one and all with the song “Deewani Mastani”, looks gorgeous. One looks forward to see her portray shades of romance as well as batlle it out on the warfront in the film. ‘Aapne To Humse Hamara Guroor Hi Cheen Liya’, mouths Priyanka Chopra with a kind of intensity that promises a great performance. But, was playing second fiddle to Deepika Padukone a good career move?

The trailer of Bajirao Mastani is one of the best one has seen this year. Sanjay Leela Bhansali seems to have put his soul into shaping up his dream project. Will the film, that waited for ten years to come alive, be worth the audience’s time and money? The trailer definitely is. One hopes the film lives up to the huge expectations too.
