‘1920’, released in 2008, brought an end to Vikram Bhatt’s dry spell at the box-office. The film, starring then newcomers Rajniesh Duggal and Adah Sharma, was a good success and gave Bhatt a hit to his name after several years of delivering numerous flops. He later went on to co-produce two more films in the franchise, ‘1920 Evil Returns’ and ‘1920 London’, directed by Bhushan Patel and Tinu Suresh Desai respectively. While the former was a commercial success, the latter, which released after being delayed for a very long time, failed to set the cash registers ringing. Perhaps, the failure of the film compelled the filmmaker to take matters in his own hands and to re-invent the franchise. With the popularity of sequels, one hopes that Vikram Bhatt has taken the right decision.

‘1921’, directed and co-produced by Vikram Bhatt, has a similar setting to that of the aforementioned period-horror films. Despite making a series of terrible films in the recent past, he still enjoys some credibility as a director, courtesy of a few good (‘Ghulam’, ‘Raaz’) to decent (‘Aawara Paagal Deewana’, ‘Jurm’) films he has to his credit. Looking at the trailer of ‘1921’, one feels Vikram is far from getting back to making watchable films. Ghosts popping out randomly in a bid to scare the viewer, asking the music composer to dish out songs that sound like dated pop music from Pakistan and sub-standard production values – the director’s films have been replete with these elements and ‘1921’, too, seems like something he made without putting any noticeable effort.

Motion Picture Capital presents, A Loneranger & Reliance Entertainment Production, written and directed by Vikram Bhatt, Produced by Reliance Entertainment and Vikram Bhatt, starring Zareen Khan and Karan Kundrra, ‘1921’ is all set to release on 12 January 2018.
